by Kasumi Bunsho (1905-1998)

Wondrous Mind!
(signed) Kancho (Abbot) Jishunken*

* One of Bunsho's monastic names.

This is a playful Zen circle—myoshin means "wondrous mind (of enlightenment)," but it is also the name of Bunsho's temple, Myoshin-ji. Bunsho is saying, "This enso represents both the Zen mind and my domain!" The contrast between the light gray wash of the enso (Bunsho's trademark) and the dark ink tones of the calligraphy is striking.

About the Artist

As a young monk, Kasumi Bunsho studied under the famous master Nantembo, and that master's influence is reflected in Bunsho's rough-hewn brushstrokes. Bunsho was the Dharma-heir of Deiryu, another outstanding Zen artist. Bunsho became abbot of Myoshin-ji in 1990, and produced many pieces of Zen art in his final years.
