One-Line Calligraphy
by Baba Ichiro (1888-1959)
Outside the Mind there is no separate Law! (sealed) Baba Ichiro

This is a well-known Zen phrase: "One's mind is Buddha; there is no separate, abstract, or artificial system of rules." From the Zen perspective, one who achieves deep insight can live freely and spontaneously. The brushwork here is appropriately free-flowing and spontaneous.
About the Artist
Buddhist layman Baba Ichiro operated an art supply store in Tokyo. After experiencing a vision of Kannon, the Bodhisattva of Compassion, Ichiro, a talented artist, began brushing Kannon paintings to distribute to the public at large.
