Calligraphy
by Takahashi Deishu (1835-1903)

Even alone in a cave a flower blooms beautifully.

Brushed by the eccentric fellow Deishu.

It is the buddha-nature of a flower to bloom beautifully wherever it is planted; human beings as well should do their best even when no one else is there to observe and praise their behavior. Deishu was perhaps the best calligrapher among the Three Shu—Katsu Kaishu, Takahashi Deishu, and Yamaoka Tesshu—and this is one of the best examples there is of his lively and expressive brushwork.

About the Artist

Deishu was Yamaoka Tesshu's brother-in-law and master of the spear. Regarding martial art training Deishu said: "If a fine sword is not polished, it will never show its luster. If you do not practice, you will never master universals and particulars." After the Meiji Restoration in 1868, Deishu lived in quiet retirement devoting himself to poetry, composition, painting, and calligraphy. His brushwork is highly valued, both for its artistic qualities and deep Zen spirit. This is a particularly fine example of his brushwork.
