Enso
by Ozeki Honko (1874-1944)
(inside the circle) The source of all things. (outside the circle) The Great Ultimate of heaven and earth. (signed) Horin* * Honko's Zen-master name.

This is a universe enso—it tells us "space is curved with no real inside or outside." The brushwork has a confident zip to it, and the signature seems to say, "I, too, am part of this universal axiom."
About the Artist
Ozeki Honko was born in Hyogo Prefecture. He was originally a monk at Tenryu-ji but later switched to Tofuku-ji. He served three times as primate of the Tofuku-ji branch of Rinzai Zen and later retired to small temple in Nara. Honko was quite a scholar and his brushwork has a rather serious tone to it.
