Daruma
by Seki Bokuo (1903-1991)

The Master of Every Situation!
(signed) Bokuo

This phrase is a saying of the great Zen master Rinzai. The second half of the verse goes, "Where you stand is the source of all truth." (This is similar to the English expression, "Heaven is where you are standing.") In Zen it is further said that "One who is wide awake has no fear." Nothing can faze or bewilder Daruma, and the Grand Patriarch is ready to face and meet any challenge. Although Zen art is usually monochromatic, sometimes color is used, as in this painting, with a pleasing effect. (Some of Hakuin's works are full-color spectacles.)
