Enso
by Shaku Daibi (1882-1964)
Not one thing is an inexhaustible treasure--there are flowers, there is the moon, there are pleasure pavilions.
(signed) Unkan*
*Daibi's Zen master name.

The inscription a favorite of Zen artists. As modern physics postulates, the universe is mostly empty space-- but at the same endlessly rich with the glories of Buddha-nature. Usually the inscription is brushed next to the enso, but in this case Daibi placed it inside--the Zen circle encompasses the universe.
About the Artist
Shaku Daibi became a Zen monk at age thirteen and trained under Shaku Soen, the famous abbot of Engakuji in Kamakura, who introduced Rinzai Zen at the 1893 Parliament of Religions in Chicago. Daibi was one of the Soen's Dharma-heirs and eventually became abbot of Kokutai-ji in Toyama Prefecture. Daibi was a colleague of D. T. Suzuki and like Suzuki, he authored many books on Zen. Calligraphic works by Daibi are rare, however.
