Zen Rabbit
by Kato Goun (1915-1992)

The golden bird is fast;

The jade rabbit is quick.

Showa Water Rabbit Year [1963]

Zuigan Goun

"Golden bird" is a symbol for the sun; "Jade rabbit" represents the moon. The entire phrase means "Time passesquickly," or from the Buddhist perspective, "All things are impermanent." This was brushed on New Year's day by Goun. He is telling us that another year has passed, days and months are flying by, so we should not waste time on petty concerns. The Zen rabbit is not shown scurring about but is rather depicted sitting quietly, in a state of repose, enjoying the moment.

About the Artist

Kato (Ruyuho) Goun was long-time abbot of Zuigan-ji, a lovely old Rinzai temple in Matsushima, one of the most beautiful places in Japan. His calligraphy is prized by connoisseurs of the tea ceremony.
