Zen Plum Blossoms
by Chingyu (1743-1822)

Pure white buds sprout from the ancient branches,

Ushering in  an immortal spring of 10,000 years.

Brushed by the Lazy OX*

*One of Chingyu's pen names

Hearty and fragrant plum blossoms appear when winter is still harsh; the lovely little flowers, sprouting from seemingly dead and twisted branches, are the first sign of spring, a season that makes us feel ageless. This is a very well brushed painting, done with vigor; we can really sense the irresistible life force of the blossoms. This Zenga also projects a subtle eroticism. It is an outstanding Zenga by a major artist.

About the Artist

Chingyu became a monk at an early age, and served as abbot of various Soto Zen temples. Chingyu was one of the most skilled and creative of Zenga artists, and his art is highly valued.
