Daruma
by Baien Shokin (1725-1800)
Daruma tied everthing together When he came to Shaolin Peak. He built a tradition without limit, That one would sacrifice an arm to transmit. Ram/Wood Year [1775] Summer while residing on Dragon Mountain Respectfully painted and inscribed by Bhikku Sokin

The inscription is rather difficult but it refers to Bodhidharma settling in his cave at Shaolin, and then transmitting his teaching to the Second Patriarch Eka who cut off his arm and presented it to Daruma as proof of his determination. This Daruma is rather stern, and has his eyes set right on the viewer. The portrait is more realistic that most Daruma paintings; it is likely a self-portrait of Baien himself
