Zen Staff
by Gasan (1853-1900)
Speak and you get thirty blows; do not speak, you still get thirty blows!
(signed ) Sokuho*
Gasan's pen name.

A staff is a classic theme of Zen art, and this is the most common inscription. It means, "Give a glib answer and you will get thirty blows of my staff; try to be coy by remaining silent and you will get additional thirty blows. Give an answer that transcends words or non-words!" The most interesting aspect of this staff is that while it is written on a tiny little calligraphy board it looks massive and heavy--the brushstroke of the staff is robust and dynamic.
About the Artist
Gasan was a Dharma-heir of the famous master Tekisui--teacher of Yamaoka Tesshu--and succeeded Tekisui as abbot of Tenryu-ji. Gasan was an excellent and prolific Zen artist.
