Fudo Myoo
by Gocho (1749-1835)

KAN[seed syllable] FUDO MYO O

Brushed by Hensho Kongo Gocho.

—This is a myogo, the magic name of Buddhist or Shinto deity, brushed as a calligraphic talisman. Gocho's myogo were believed to be especially effective. When he created this piece, Gocho animated the brushstrokes, seemingly breathing life into the calligraphy. The calligraphy following the seed syllable that forms the four characters FU DO MYO O was done in one flowing movement. This is an outstanding example of the powerful mystery that is often present in Zen calligraphy.

About the Artist

Gocho was actually a Tendai monk, famed for his wonder-working abilities and effective prayers. He was also a first-rate painter of conventional Buddha images but also produced many fine pieces in the free-form Zen style. Gocho's distinctive brushwork is considered among the finest ever done by a Buddhist priest, and he ranks among the most creative Zen artists.
