About the Artist
Gempo, long-time abbot of Ryutaku-ji, and briefly head prelate of the Myoshin-ji branch of Zen, was perhaps the most outstanding and influential of the 20th-century Zen masters. Gempo was called the "modern Hakuin," and he was the master of Nakagawa Soen, among many others. Nearly blind, he did not learn how to read or write until later in life. Gempo's brushwork is simple, direct, and unaffected, pure Zen art.
