Zen Mouse by Seki Bokuo (1903-1991) (signed) Bokuo Enlarge Image Zen artists tend to portray the zodiac animal the "Rat" more as a cute "mouse." Such mice are a common sight in old temples. Those born in the year of the Rat are said to be shrewd and industrious, and symbolize prosperity. About the Artist Seki Bokuo was born in Gunma prefecture. He was Dharma-Heir of Seki Seisetsu and spent many years as Zen master and abbot of Tenryu-ji, a major Rinzai temple in Kyoto. Bokuo wrote numerous books on different aspects of Zen training, and he was a prolific, and talented, Zen artist.
