Kaze Wind
by Yamamoto Gempo (1886-1961)

WIND (KAZE)

The 96-year-old fellow

Hannya*

Gempo's Zen master name

Japanese artists are fond of the single character kaze, "wind." The most famous work of art by the celebrated Mingei artist and "Human Natural Treasure" Serizawa Keisuke was a stencil-dyed print of the character for "wind." This is Gempo's hand brushed "wind." It can mean "fresh breeze," "nature's beauty," "style," even "the flow of time." Gempo did not learn how to read and write until he was almost forty, and there is something extraordinarily pure and direct about his brushwork. Brushed in the last year of his life, this is an especially fine piece.

About the Artist

Gempo, long-time abbot of Ryutaku-ji, and briefly head prelate of the Myoshin-ji branch of Zen, was perhaps the most outstanding and influential of the 20th-century Zen masters. Gempo was called the "modern Hakuin," and he was the master of Nakagawa Soen, among many others. Nearly blind, he did not learn how to read or write until later in life. Gempo's brushwork is simple, direct, and unaffected, pure Zen art.
