Snow Daruma
by Daisetsu Joen (1787-1855)

Snow Daruma--although it is freezing, his expression shows no sign of the cold.

Painted and inscribed by Daisetsu

One Zen teaching is "become one with the environment--when it is hot be hot, when it is cold be cold." In Japanese, snowman is "yukidaruma" and this is a humorous Zen play on words.

About the Artist

Daisetsu Joen was abbot of Kyoto's Shokoku-ji .
