Zen Mount Fuji
by Ueda Gizan (1891-1972)

(signed) Murasakino* Gizan

*Another name for Daitoku-ji

Majestic Mount Fuji is a classic theme of Japanese painting in general, and Zenga in particular. In Zen, "Fuji" means "not two." representing the unity between man and nature, and the non-dual character of existence. Also, a good Zen practitioner should sit like Mount Fuji in solitary splendor. This is a perfect example of Zen art: the mountain is created with just a few brushstrokes but it seems as solid as can be, soaring high above. A beautiful and inspiring Zenga.
