One-Line
by Takahashi Deishu (1835-1903)

Listen to the sound of the wind in the pines to purify your thoughts.

Brushed by Deishu Koji*

*Buddhist layman

The sentiment is simple but true: the beautiful sounds of nature can sooth and cleanse our hearts. The brushwork here is also bright and refreshing.

About the Artist

Deishu was Yamaoka Tesshu's brother-in-law and master of the spear. Regarding martial art training Deishu said: "If a fine sword is not polished, it will never show its luster. If you do not practice, you will never master universals and particulars." After the Meiji Restoration in 1868, Deishu lived in quiet retirement devoting himself to poetry, composition, painting, and calligraphy. His brushwork is highly valued, both for its artistic qualities and deep Zen spirit. This is a particularly fine example of his brushwork.
