Daruma
by Ienaga Ichido
DON'T KNOW!
(signed) The old fellow Shikatsu of Tofuku-ji

This is Daruma's answer to the question, "Who are you?" All of us think we know exactly who we are but, according to Buddhism, all contructs of self are false and artifical. Daruma represents the Zen mind beyond all concepts.
About the Artist
Ichinaga Ichido became a Zen monk at the age of six, and was a student of Sansho-ken, the famous Zen master and artist, for a time. Ichido eventually became abbot of the important Rinzai temple Tofuku-ji in Kyoto. Ichido was well-known for his distinctive and expressive Daruma paintings.
