Lady Plum Daruma
by Tanahashi Ayako (1839-1939)
[Daruma]
Sitting for ages/
facing a wall /
looking within--/
not speaking, transcending time,/
becoming enlightened.

Lady Plum
100 years old

An extremely unsual Daruma portrait by Lady Plum--Tanahashi Ayako, an amazing woman. She brushed this extraordinarily powerful Daruma in her one-hundredth year. Such a dynamic portrait would be envied by even the most vigorous Zen monk. When I first saw this painting I could not believe that the person who painted it was actually one hundred, but upon doing research I discovered that she was. Note how the feminine script of the inscription is balanced by the bold masculinity of the Daruma. It is a stunning work of art.
