This was brushed in the year of the Rooster, of course. Zen masters often did such paintings for each new year, with the appropriate animal for that cycle, to serve as good-luck charms for their parishioners. Guon was longtime abbot of Zuigan-ji in Matsushima, a marvelous Zen temple in one of the most beautiful areas in Japan.
About the Artist
Kato (Ruyuho) Goun was long-time abbot of Zuigan-ji, a lovely old Rinzai temple in Matsushima, one of the most beautiful places in Japan. His calligraphy is prized by connoisseurs of the tea ceremony.
