Mountains Calligraphy
by Shaku Daibi (1882-1964)
Mountains High, Moon Small.

The mountains rise high in the distance, and above the peaks is the moon, shining brightly as a small, single pearl. The characters are simple but the meaning is profound. Daibi's brushstrokes are rich and bright. Daibi was abbot of Kokutai-ji and well known as a scholar.
About the Artist
Shaku Daibi became a Zen monk at age thirteen and trained under Shaku Soen, the famous abbot of Engakuji in Kamakura, who introduced Rinzai Zen at the 1893 Parliament of Religions in Chicago. Daibi was one of the Soen's Dharma-heirs and eventually became abbot of Kokutai-ji in Toyama Prefecture. Daibi was a colleague of D. T. Suzuki and like Suzuki, he authored many books on Zen. Calligraphic works by Daibi are rare, however.
