Direct Mind Calligraphy
by Hayashi Ekyo (1896-1979)

Direct Mind is the Dojo!

Brushed by Tokufuku Maigan.*

* One of Ekyo's pen names.

This famous Zen saying means: "Wherever you are, under any circumstances, you can practice patience, you can improve your mind." Being in a quiet, beautiful place to train is nice, but it is also a luxury that sometimes is just not possible. In Christian terms, " Heaven is right where you are standing."

About the Artist

Ekyo was ordained a monk at the age of ten and then trained at Myoshi-ji under Hiramoto Tokuju. He served as Abbot of Myoshin-ji Monastery for twenty years, and then in 1950 Ekyo became Primate (kansho) of the Tofuku-ji branch of Rinzai Zen. He produced many works of Zen art, specializing in paintings of Daruma and Kannon.
