VIRTUE
by Kasumi Bunsho (1905-1998)

TOKU (VIRTUE)
(signed) Kaisei Dainanju*
Eighty-three (years old).

* One of Kasumi's pen names.

Toku is the kind of natural virtue that permeates one's body and mind. It includes both virtuous thought and virtuous actions, and it is something that cannot be learned from the outside--it must be manifested from within.

About the Artist

As a young monk, Kasumi Bunsho studied under the famous master Nantembo, and that master's influence is reflected in Bunsho's rough-hewn brushstrokes. Bunsho was the Dharma-heir of Deiryu, another outstanding Zen artist. Bunsho became abbot of Myoshin-ji in 1990, and produced many pieces of Zen art in his final years.
