Dog Daruma
by Furunaka Hoshu (1877-1947)

This dog sings a tranquil melody.

(signed) The old fellow Hoshu of Myoshin[-ji].

Dogs are a favorite theme of Zen artists, since a stray puppy is the source of the most well-known of Zen koans: "Does this dog have the buddha-nature?" Since this was brushed for the Year of the Dog, this creature is front and center, and Hoshu has portrayed him humorously as a high-ranking Zen patriarch with a rather self-satisfied expression.

About the Artist

Hoshu was born in Akita Prefecture in the north of Japan. He became a Zen acolyte at age nine, and eventually the Dharma-heir of the illustrious master Seki Rozan. Hoshu served as president of Rinzai Daigaku in Kyoto, and then Primate of the Myoshin-ji Branch of Rinzai. Hoshu was a skilled a creative Zen artist.
