Three Great Teachers
by Morotake Ekido (1805-1879)
Great Practitioner Fugen Bosatsu (left) Great Teacher Shakyamuni Butsu (center) Great Saint Monju Bosatsu (right) (bottom seal) Sengai Ekido

Fugen Bosatsu (Samantabhadra Bodhisattva) is the teacher of skillful means. Monju Bosatsu (Manjushri Bodhisattva) is the teacher of wisdom. The Grand Teacher is Shakyamuni Buddha, the one who realized full and perfect enlightenment. The technical name for this kind of calligraphy is myogo, "holy name(s)" and it was hung in the home altar as an object of worship, or from the Zen standpoint, contemplation. Usually, such calligraphy is not signed, but only sealed. (One would not presume to include one's own name in such august company. Here, temple seals are stamped over the calligraphy itself.) The brushwork here is dignified, quiet, and respectful.
