Amida Sutra
by Kaneda Chikuho (twentieth century)

Namu Amida Butsu

(dated) Showa 34 (1959) April 8 (Buddha's Birthday)
Respectfully brushed by Kaneda Chikuho.

This is a wonderful example of shakyo,* the devotional practice of copying sutras. It is a handwritten copy of the Amida Sutra, and the little characters of the text are arranged to form the large characters "Hail to Amida Buddha." It was brushed on April 8, the date Buddha's birth is celebrated in Japan.

* See Sacred Calligraphy of the East by John Stevens (Boston: Shambhala Publications, 1995) for more information and examples of shakyo.
